Penname: Susan Saiter Sullivan, <-website link
Susan Mary Saiter Sullivan, 76, passed away Tuesday, December 27, 2022. She was born September 12, 1946, in Alma, Michigan, to the late Andrew Jackson Sullivan and Donna Beardsley Sullivan.

During an itinerant upbringing, she grew up across the Midwest before graduating from the University of Michigan. An accomplished author and journalist, she wrote three novels laced with insight and humor, and reported extensively for The New York Times and the Chicago Sun-Times, among other newspapers and magazines. A gifted instructor and mentor, she also taught English literature and composition at a community college attended by many poor and immigrant students looking to fashion a future.

As a journalist, she wrote about public housing, education, the courts, travel, animals, sports and lifestyles. Exposing injustice was her greatest mission in becoming a journalist. The power of education was another abiding interest. Her articles succeeded in uncovering inequalities and misconceptions before they became common topics.

You can access her writing at https://www.susansaitersullivan.com . Among her vast passions and volunteer activities, she especially loved dogs and France, and was an avid horseback rider.

She was deeply involved in the two Episcopal churches she belonged to, St. James in New York City and St. Ann’s in Bridgehampton, N.Y.

She lived with her husband, Sonny Kleinfield, in New York City and Water Mill, N.Y. In addition to her parents, Susan is preceded in death by her brother, Danny Sullivan. She is survived by her loving husband; two loving daughters, Samantha Kleinfield and Laura Saiter; brother, Pat Sullivan; sister, Mary Sullivan Grochan; and sister-in-law, Dawn Kleinfield.

Obituary from Newspaper

As we knew Donna at our 50th Reunion, 2014

Neal Bernard McKavic

1946 - December 09, 2021

Neal's cousin, Barb Lutz-Geis send us notification of Neal's passing later in the day he died. She said there would likely be no official obituary so below are her words:
Wanted to tell you that my cousin and our classmate Neal McKavic (74) passed away this morning. He suffered greatly over the last year with throat cancer. He was living in Glen Campbell, PA near nephews and nieces and up until last year, his sister, who passed away in November, 2020. I doubt there will be an obit.

Neal lived in Florida for 30 years or more and worked in the landscaping business until he retired and moved back to PA. He attended all but the most recent class reunion with his long white hair, spiffy suit and hat. Last time we both attended he was in a decline then, being on the edge of Parkinson-like issues. The Lutz/McKavic families were very close growing up in Bethel. We all have many, many fond memories of Neal and his antics. And, maybe you don't remember this tidbit, but his dad, John McKavic, was the building custodian at the junior high for a number of years. Neal never married so he is survived by one brother, many loving cousins, nieces and nephews.

That was followed up my some rememberance from Pat Quel Brown who has done a yeoman's job of keeping in touch with all of us:

It was just the last few weeks that I once again thought about Neal and wondered how he was doing with his throat cancer. I should have tried to contact him again and I am very sad that I did not try to call. I spoke to him on 4-16 and sent cards 4-27 and 7-11. I tried to call him several times later, but I got no answer. Unfortunately weeks and months slipped by quickly. I know he told me he was unable to talk above a whisper the last time we spoke.

Neal was a wonderful classmate and truly a dedicated guy to our class and reunions. He even stopped by my home on several occasions to talk since he did not have a computer. We (as a committee) always wondered before each reunion, what entrance Neal had planned for all of us. He was creative and unique. Such a change for the quiet boy that I did not know well in school. Neal caught us all off guard at our 10th reunion, but we were ready for him after that and nothing surprised us. Such a nice guy. He will truly be missed by all of us who knew him. I am sorry to hear that he suffered so much his last year. It must have been difficult for him being ill and losing a brother (who was in my sisters-in-law, Mary Lou Brown, class at Bethel) and a sister recently.

His brother John Earl Llewellyn (& Carol) of Beverly, OH he admired and held as one of his closest friends. His grandchildren, Isabella Grace "Scooter", Anna, J.R., Eden, Elliott, and Emelia were a source of joy for him. James Gerald Kollar

Dr. James G. Kollar, VMD, peacefully passed on March 14, 2014. He was loved and loving to his last day and will be forever in the hearts of his family and friends.

Jim was an extraordinary man by all standards. In his youth, he played football and was Pennsylvania state champion in the discus. He played college football under Engle and Paterno at Penn State. He then secured his veterinary medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania and moved with his wife, Marilou, to Virginia Beach to build what would become a successful practice in Princess Anne Veterinary Hospital.

Jim loved life and lived every moment to the fullest. He was incredibly creative in cooking, carpentry, architecture, gardening, repurposing, and being an all-around Renaissance man. He co-founded one of the first microbreweries in the country in Chesbay Brewing Company in the early 80’s. With the help of family and friends, he built and has continued his labor of love in a beautiful second home in the Blue Ridge Mountains. In the last 10 years of his retirement, Jim and Marilou have enjoyed world travel and reconnection with college friends.

His other defining trait was the intensity of his love of family and friends. His heart was as big as his spirit—which was immense. Jim is loved by his wife, Lou; his children, Jamie and Brian; his son and daughter-in-laws, Colin and Valarie; his two beautiful granddaughters, Evie and Madi; mother, Ann; brother, Frank among too many other family and friends to name.

He will be missed by all but carried in our hearts every day. His legacy of love, loyalty, and commitment will follow him forever. In lieu of flowers, an endowment to the First Colonial High School track and field program will be established in his honor. A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 22, 2014 at All Saints’ Episcopal Church at 11am. Reception to follow.

I have also learned that David’s father still lives in Bethel Park and attends Ruthfred Lutheran Church.

From our reunion committee, we sincerely want to express our condolences as David will sadly be missed by all of us.

Our prayers and thoughts are with David’s family at this time.

6/12/12 from Dave's daughter, Davida...

I just wanted to thank you for the kind words written about my late father. Also I know there was question as to whether he was Navy or Air Force and I assure you it was Air Force. I remember the first reunion he went to vividly. He didn't want to go since it was my 21st birthday. However I insisted and said it was important that he go. Thankfully he agreed. And when he came home I know that he was very happy that he had gone.

Davida is going to send me a picture from about 2008 to post.

Charles Nichols

January 13, 2009

As I look back and remember Chuck, I would like to share a memory with you...... (Pat Quel Brown)

Chuck never drove a car, but he rode the light rail system every day for years to a beauty shop he owned off Route 88 which was located at the entrance to my housing plan. Thus, I would see him almost on a daily bases getting on or off the trolley while I was also going to work. On many occasions, I had time to stop and talk with him. Several years ago, he closed his beauty shop to start working in a new salon closer to his home, which I believe was near Shady Side, so we lost personal contact. But a friend of mine always remembered to tell Chuck “Hi” for me and kept the line of communication going. One time Chuck and his sister Avis came to a women’s organization I belong to and presented a program on hair and beauty care. He surely knew these topics well.

The following is his funeral notice as written in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette which read as follows:
